Whitemarsh Township and Conshohocken Borough jointly share a two-mile riverfront along the Schuylkill River that is in the process of transitioning from heavy industrial to up-scale office and residential uses. The riverfront is served by a commercial center, a mixture of existing residential neighborhoods, two rail stations, a network of regional trail systems, and an underdeveloped county park.
Recently, both communities have developed land-use strategies that would preserve the water’s edge for a linear open space and park. CVDA was chosen to lead a team to develop a linear park that would improve access to the riverfront, connect with regional trails, create a regional destination that would provide opportunities for economic development, meet regional open space and recreational needs, and incorporate sustainable design principals.
CVDA developed the overall concept, phasing, and implementation strategy that would ultimately link the communities on both sides of the Schuylkill River. The overall plan provided for major event space along the riverfront and unique features, such as the cyclone bridge, that would become a regional destination.
